In 1870 Kwong Wai Siew Peck San Theng is a cemetery of about 100,000 graves for the Cantonese and Hakka community which is now known as Bishan.

In 1942, during the Battle of Singapore, the Japanese and British fought fiercely at Peck San Theng. After the fall of Singapore to the Japanese, Peck San Theng became a place of refuge from the Japanese.

In 1973, Peck San Theng stopped accepting burials and six years later the land was reclaimed by the government for redevelopment. Between 1982 – 1984 graves were being exhumed to make way for the construction of Bishan New Town.

Now Bishan is a mature residential town and is ranked 38th biggest in terms of geographical size and 22th most populated area in Singapore. Bishan is homed to four of the top schools in Singapore namely Catholic High, Raffles Girls’ School, Raffles institution and Ai Tong School.
